Instagram doesn't notify you when someone unfollows, and the app itself won't tell you. The safest way is to request your own data export from Instagram, then compare your followers list against your following list — which is exactly what Ghosted does.
Open Instagram → Settings → Accounts Center → Your information and permissions → Download your information. Choose "Some of your information", select Followers and following, set the date range to All time, and pick format JSON. Instagram will email you a ZIP file. Drop the followers file (followers_1.json, plus followers_2.json etc. if you have more than 1,000 followers) and following.json into Ghosted — you'll see everyone who doesn't follow you back.
No — and you should be wary of any site that claims to do this. Looking up follower lists for arbitrary accounts requires either scraping Instagram (which violates their Terms of Service and often results in legal action) or asking for your Instagram login (which gets your account banned and your credentials stolen).
Ghosted only works with the data export Instagram gives you for your own account. This is the only safe way to analyze an Instagram account's followers. If you're a social media manager analyzing a brand you run, ask the account owner to share their own JSON export with you.
Yes. Ghosted runs entirely in your browser. We never ask for your Instagram password, never upload your data anywhere, and there is no server that could store or leak it. You can verify this yourself: open your browser's developer tools, go to the Network tab, and upload your files. You'll see zero outgoing requests containing your data.
By contrast, most "unfollower apps" on the App Store and Play Store ask for your Instagram login — that's a massive red flag. Once they have your credentials, they can read your DMs, post as you, harvest your contacts, or sell your data. Never give a third-party app your Instagram password.
Using Ghosted itself cannot get you banned — nothing touches your Instagram account. We never log in, never automate anything, and never communicate with Instagram's servers on your behalf.
However, if you then manually unfollow a large number of accounts too quickly, Instagram may temporarily restrict your account for suspected bot activity. Stick to around 100–150 unfollows per day, space them out over hours rather than minutes, and you'll be fine. Ghosted includes a checkbox next to each account to help you track your progress across multiple sessions so you don't lose your place.
Usually within a few minutes to a couple of hours for follower/following data only. If you accidentally request a full data export (posts, messages, photos), it can take up to 48 hours. To speed things up, select only "Followers and following" when requesting — don't select all data.
followers_1.json lists the accounts that follow you. following.json lists the accounts you follow. Ghosted compares the two to find:
Ghosts — people you follow who don't follow you back.
Fans — people who follow you but you don't follow back.
Mutuals — accounts where the follow is reciprocal.
If you have more than 1,000 followers, Instagram may split the followers list across multiple files (followers_1.json, followers_2.json, and so on). Ghosted accepts all of them at once — just select every followers file together when uploading, or drag them onto the Followers box as a group.
Yes. Ghosted works in any modern browser on iPhone, Android, iPad, or desktop. On mobile, the main extra step is extracting the JSON files from the ZIP Instagram emails you — both iOS Files and Android's built-in file manager can do this. Tap and hold the ZIP, choose "Uncompress," then upload the two JSON files from the extracted folder.
